At the heart of Croatia’s tourism is the stunning Adriatic coastline, 1185 islands among which the best known include Hvar, Brač and Korčula. The increasing popularity of the island of Hvar is recognized by Lonely Planet, who name Croatia’s premier island in their top 10 destinations for 2012. The New York Times proclaimed Hvar one of 12 top tourist destinations in the word in 2008 and as the first destination in the European Mediterranean. According to the most famous American tourist magazine “Travel – Leisure”, Hvar was included in the top 10 list of most favorable island destinations in the world and was proclaimed the most glamorous Adriatic island..
This short film will answer your question, ”why Hvar?”:
Hvar is a unique combination of rich cultural and historic heritage, Mediterranean nature and modern tourist facilities.
Croatia has been blessed by the fascinating beauty of the Adriatic Sea, towards which nature has been very generous and bestowed upon it is the most remarkable fleet of islands on the Mediterranean coast. A short two hour flight followed by the another 2 hour sea crossing by boat separates even the most distant European destinations from the place of balance between people and pristine nature, traditions and modernity, remarkable cultural and historical heritage and reticence of the populace who inhabit the karst environment, a land of high standards and original charm.
Hvar is known as the sunniest island of the Adriatic. It’s closest city is Split, which is also the biggest port. It has been the center of Dalmatia region from the times of emperor Diocletian. The Biokovo mountain range, some hundred kilometers away looks like the Alps (especially during the weather and wind called Bura), and the view from the top stretches across the entire Adriatic.
Hvar is the only island in the WORLD with three UNESCO-heritage sites

- 500 hundred years old Procession Za Križen on the island of Hvar
- Lace-making by Benedictine nuns in Hvar town
- Stari Grad Plain or Ager which has been in existence since the town of Stari Grad itself, with the arrival of the ancient Greeks in 384 BC.
